The following year saw all Buicks adopt an all-coil-spring suspension, an industry first. As overall Buick sales rose through the remainder of the 1930s, they were pushed along by the Series 40, which gained the name Special in 1936. For 1939, production of Specials hit 175,568 and accounted for 84 percent of all that year’s Buicks. The company turned out 283,204 of that model year’s cars and set the stage for even better results the following year. This was an amazing turn of events for a manufacturer that had made fewer than 47,000 cars as recently as 1933 and was rumored to be on the chopping block at General Motors. Defunct since the mid-1990s, Vector Motors Corporation was recently revived and a new supercar is reportedly in development with promises that it will compete with leading performance cars such as Ferrari and Lamborghini. Vector Motors Corporation is a notorious car manufacturer that went bust before really taking off. Soon after taking over as division president in October 1933, he set his sights on creating a new lower-priced line in hopes of winning over scarce Depression-era customers. Pierce-Arrow merged with Studebaker in the 1930s, but sales declined until the last car rolled off the assembly line in 1938, a victim of the Great Depression.

A four-door convertible joined the Special line for 1937, but the stylish body type made its last appearance as a Series 40 car in 1940. Series production dropped to 117,355, but some sales had to have been lost to the newly introduced Series 50 Super, which successfully combined the looks of the big Roadmaster with the Special chassis. Ironically, the Special had a little less to do with Buick’s great market performance in 1940 than it had in prior years. However, people who bought Vectors complained that the cars were technically unsophisticated and suffered from inconsistent functions and poor performance. Yet the image of Vector cars was used to market fast U.S.-made vehicles throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. Vectors were so well-marketed that many people falsely believed that Vector made the fastest cars in the world. In the 1950s, the Hudson Hornet was a NASCAR champ, though the production cars were slow-selling. The Hudson brand of car was created in 1910 when former employees of Olds Motor Works banded together and received a loan from a department store tycoon to start a new company featuring a small, shiny brass roadster that could reach speeds of 50 miles per hour.
